After two years of testing and touring, the GEM-Tower, which stands for Green Energy Mill, will be transformed into GEM-Stage. During Kings Day 2021 at the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven, the stage will be shown for the first time. With the addition of a stage and a hydrogen generator, the GEM-Stage will soon supply 100% green energy to music acts at festivals and events.

The power of the GEM-Stage is generated by wind energy from the windmill, solar energy from the panels and solar cells in the colored panels. As of today, a hydrogen generator has been added. This latest addition ensures that the GEM-Stage can provide enough power under any weather condition to supply a complete live show with sustainable power.

Hydrogen

Max Aerts, founder of DENS, on the use of the 20 kW hydrogen generator: “Hydrozine, also known as formic acid, is a liquid hydrogen carrier. Inside the generator is a reformer that converts hydrozine to a hydrogen gas, this gas is then converted to electricity in a fuel cell. Because hydrozine is non-flammable and non-explosive, this is a safe and user-friendly solution for using hydrogen at festivals and events. This way we retain all the advantages of hydrogen as an energy carrier, but without the disadvantages.”

Awareness

The GEM team is looking forward to the developments of the GEM-Stage, as is Faas Moonen of leading partner TU Eindhoven: “We hope that we can increase awareness of sustainable electricity use. On the one hand we have to produce sustainable power and show that, and at the same time people on the downstream side have to be smarter about how they use it. The goal is to be able to have the same party, but in a sustainable way so that we no longer have to rely on diesel generators.”

In the summer of 2021, the GEM-Stage will tour several European countries.
